‘Somerset’ beach house – Riverton
‘Somerset’ has been the Anderson family holiday home for the last 50
years. Only 20 metres from the sea, the house overlooks Taramea Bay and the mouth of the Aparima River harbour.
Spend a day watching the tide rise and fall and the fishing boats return
from a day at sea. If you are tempted to have a swim, one of the safest swimming beaches in the country is right at your front door. Walking the beach is popular, as is exploring the Riverton
Rocks coastline. There are a number of other good walks, on shore and in bush, nearby.
Riverton/Aparima was one of the first places the earliest European
sealers, whale hunters and flax traders met local Maori and began settling permanently. The Riverton Museum tells the stories of these and other settlers, from Chinese goldminers to timber
workers and farmers from the British Isles and elsewhere. The Museum is a great place to start the Riverton-Aparima South Coast Heritage Trail, which takes in scenery, beaches and historic
sites such as historic buildings and fortification earthworks.
‘Somerset’ is fully equipped for guests to self-cater. Breakfast food can
be supplied by arrangement.
There are also good restaurants close by, and the fish and chip shop in
Riverton serves fresh blue cod worthy of Riverton’s status as a fishing harbour.

Riverton ‘Somerset’ $150 per night with reduction for longer stays.
